Paul Coutts hopes his vast experience can help fire Fleetwood Town towards the top end of the League One table this season.

The 30-year-old midfielder boasts three promotions in his career so far, twice out of League One before featuring in Sheffield United’s rise to the Premier League last season.

And after signing a two-year deal on Wednesday, the midfielder revealed he wants to add more success to his CV during his time at Highbury Stadium.

“We want to have a good season this year and that success is promotion,” he said. "Hopefully we can improve on last season, the team weren’t that far from the play-offs last season and that will be the aim this time.”

Coutts turned down approaches from a number of clubs to join Town after a summer of uncertainty for the first time in his career.

He added: “The manager [Joey Barton] spoke to me over the summer about coming up here and when I came to Poolfoot on Monday, and saw the facilities that the club has, my mind was made up and it was an easy decision to come here and be part of the project they are building.

“It feels great signing for the club, and I am delighted to get the deal over the line.

“It has been an unusual summer for me as it is the first time I’ve been out of contract, but to finally put pen to paper, and be up here at Fleetwood, it’s a great feeling.

“The lads have made me feel welcome, and it always helps knowing a few of them when going through the settling in process.

“I just can’t wait to get out there!”

The former Scotland Under-21 international has played majority of his football in the Championship with Peterborough, Preston North End Derby and the Blades, and now the midfielder is looking to push Town into the second tier of English football.

“I need to get playing and that starts by getting fit in pre-season and working hard on and off the pitch. Hopefully I can add something to this team and push this club in the right direction."
