Evans reflects on the draw against Southend

6 April 2019

Fleetwood Town forward Ched Evans scored a brace on Saturday to give his side a share of the points after his side drew 2-2 with Southend United.

Town went behind twice at Highbury, with Harry Bunn and Luke Hyam put the visitors ahead on two accounts, but Joey Barton’s side managed to equalise both times, through captain Evans, who scored his second minutes before the final whilst from the penalty spot.

A frustrating result considering The Cod Army were the better team throughout the majority of the game, especially in the second half. However, Fleetwood are now unbeaten in their last three fixtures.

Here are the best quotes from the goal scorer, Ched Evans…

Thoughts on the game…

“I thought the game was slow at times, it looked like they came for a draw or to nick a goal. Unfortunately, they nicked two goals and the second was a good strike from the edge of the box. I just think it’s disappointing in the way that we conceded the two goals and we’ve conceded two rubbish goals as well. It’s a bit disappointing.

“The frustration is that we’ve not won the game, but we’ve scored two goals at home and you work all week on keeping the ball out the back of the net. Looking at the performance of the second half, you have to take positives from it but it’s two points dropped I think.”

On his two goals to share the points…

“Obviously we needed a reaction in the second half, and we got it but to be honest at this stage of the season and where we are, we can’t afford to be giving 45 minutes to anybody in any game, especially goals.

“I practise penalties and stuff like that, so I just waited to see which way the goalie went and then put it the other way really. I knew it was a young goalie and that he’d be a bit naive and go early, so it was a nice goal to score."

On potentially getting 20 goals…

“It is achievable, and I think that as a team we are creating more chances with the style of football we are playing, I still think we can get better in the final third and be more clinical.

“As when you see the amount of time we spend in the final third today, especially the second half, we should be getting more shots at goal, more crosses and things like that but it seems like it’s not falling for us. Whereas for other teams it just drops in the right spot but that’s something we will work on.”

Looking ahead to Barnsley and the chance of the play-offs…

“We’ve got every game to win, and the way that the gaffer is, he’s not going to take a step off the gas.

“It’s going to be a hard game because Barnsley are a good team, but I think if we go there with the right mind set and try and get a result, it’s definitely possible.”
