Evans: It all goes in our favour if people underestimate us

6 September 2018

Forward Ched Evans spoke to the press on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Evans has scored five goals so far this season, with his latest coming in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Bradford City. The Welshman spoke about the threats Sunderland pose, but knows his side can go there and bring the points home, with being unbeaten on the road.

Here are the best quotes from Ched Evans’ pre-match press conference.

Evans on Sunderland…

“When I look at us and the way we are as a team, we are probably labeled as the underdogs but if you look at the result we have been getting, it goes in our favour if people underestimate us.

“We are going to Sunderland looking for that positive result, and I know if we go there and people start to label it as David versus Goliath, we as players will take that.

“As players we know what we are capable of and I know we are all looking forward to going to a great stadium with a great atmospher,e and it will be perfect for the lads to enjoy themselves.”

Evans on Town’s start to the season…

“It is early days still but for the club and the team, we have started off really well and there is a great atmosphere in and around the place at the moment.

“That was evident on Saturday when the team showed how committed we are for each other and how much effort we will put in against teams, especially against Bradford in our victory.

“When I met the gaffer in the summer he said he had a plan and I think the lads have all bought into that and it does all filter down from the Chairman and the manager. He has been allowed to bring players in and there are plenty of clubs that don’t get that support which is needed.

“If you look at our squad and to those who aren’t actively starting on a Saturday, we have strength in depth and that is credit to this football club.”

Evans on being the named the underdogs and relishing in that…

“There is no pressure on us at the weekend, but as professionals, they should be putting pressure on themselves.

“Teams can only go so long before others start to sit up and recognises that we, Fleetwood Town are here to compete and be at the top end of the league table. We don’t want to be that team who just takes part.

“When you look at our results away from home, it’s great and the mentality we go into these matches with just shows up. Majority would feel the pressure when only having ten men but we stuck together and carried on playing the way we know.”
