Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton was delighted with his team after winning 4-0 at in-form Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
After a draw on Tuesday night against Wycombe, it was the perfect response at the Keepmoat Stadium with Ched Evans, James Wallace, Ash Eastham all scoring in the opening 45 minutes.
Ash Hunter made it 4-0 after half-time with a well taken finish, and even with Doncaster knocking on the yellow wall of Fleetwood, the Cod Army stood firm and kept another clean sheet on the road this season.
Here are the key quotes from Joey’s post-match interview…
On the game…
“I think our performance in the last game against Wycombe showed me the character we have in this squad, and also with the coaching staff and I have said on numerous occasions, if we play at that level and work for each other, we will get results.
“We’ve come to a difficult place, a side who were sat third in the league table before kick-off, and with a manager who got Manager of the Month, and also a player who got Player of the Month, they are a proper side and our lads put in a ruthless performance.
“In previous games we have taken the lead, but haven’t got the second goal and killed teams off. Today we showed what we are capable of and it is always nice to keep a clean sheet and that put the mark on the team performance.”
On his side’s first half performance…
“Doncaster are a good side and nobody has come here and done what we have done for them, and that comes from when I talk about the continuation of us developing and improving as a side.
“Make no bones about it, we will probably be the only side to come here and do that due to the quality of the opposition they’ve played. The key for us is building on from that, learning every game and improving from our previous few games.
On the fans at the Keepmoat…
“The fans were outstanding today!
“As the lads were on the coach heading to the ground, we saw a lot of young lads and lasses looking for a watering hole, whilst singing and I must admit we thought it was Doncaster fans.
“Next minute we see George at the front looking liked the piped piper and it really picked the lads up on the bus with their chanting when we were at the traffic lights, and that is massive.
“The drums were going and I thought the fans were outstanding and I am happy to reward them with that result.”
