Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton was delighted with his side after their 2-1 victory at home against Shrewsbury Town.

After picking up all three points last Saturday against Doncaster Rovers, it was down to Town to claim their second home win of the season after Paddy Madden opened the scoring with a glanced header across goal. Ash Hunter picking up his 10th assist of the season.

Wes Burns made it 2-0 just before the interval after a mazy run down the right wing, and a one two with Madden. The 23-year-old found himself inside the six yard box unmarked, and slotted the ball home.

Josh Laurent got a consolation for the Salops, but it could have been more if it wasn’t for Alex Cairns and his point blank range save.

Here are the key quotes from Joey’s post-match interview…

On the two goals…

“I thought we were outstanding first-half, and the two goals that we scored today were absolutely first class! I have watched them back and the first goal sees a 20-30 pass move, finished off with a trademark Paddy Madden near post flick header, and Ash Hunter getting another assist.

“Wes’ goal saw Paddy [Madden] get the assist after a marvellous bit of individual skill and it came again from some great play. The substitute didn’t help us and I probably made the wrong call on that, but you have to defend your goal and Shrewsbury are a side who have some really good players, alongside some physical players.

“We are back to winning ways at home, and now have back to back wins in the league and for me that is very important. For the group I thought our performance warranted that and now we just need to keep building.”

On Nathan Sheron…

“Nathan Sheron was outstanding and he is a player we’ve got high hopes for, and he is a great character who has a lot of composure for his age, so for that I am really pleased for him.

“He played a part in both the goals today and he is really developing as a player. Shez is a credit to his craft and he always wants to learn and is key to improve.”

On the fans…

“They were massive today! We’ve said if they stick with us and support the team.

“Today they have seen two fantastic goals and that is their reward along with the three points, and it was two for one in Jim’s Bar after the match!”
