Preview: Fleetwood Town v Coventry City

Fleetwood Town welcome Coventry City to Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night in Sky Bet League One.

Town come in this fixture after Coventry being three unbeaten in their last three home games. The last match at Highbury saw Joey Barton’s side pick up their first home clean sheet of the season, that being the goalless draw with Walsall.

With City winning the Checkatrade Trophy last season, and with gaining automatic promotion, the Blues have maintained that momentum and only sit a few points of the play-off places.

Joey Barton spoke to the media ahead of the match, and here are some of his best quotes.

Town boss Joey Barton said…

The beauty of this league is that games come thick and fast. It will be another tough fixture against Coventry who are a side that are doing well in the league. They are a team who have come from below and have carried on that winning momentum with them this season.

“We are three games unbeaten at home and it is just important that we go and put on a good show for our fans, and bounce back in the right manner.”

Coventry City manager Mark Robbins said…

I would have been devastated with a defeat against Peterborough, and the manner of the goal that they scored which we gave them, it would have been harsh.

“It was brilliant to get back in the game, and we showed great character right at the death, to get an equaliser so quickly after was brilliant. Conor Chaplin keeps his record up of getting late goals, certainly at home, which is good, but I’m still disappointed that we didn’t get all three points.

“I think we were capable of doing that, I thought our performance was very good all night against a good side. They play in a way that tries to put you under pressure all the time, but I thought we played well.”

Coventry: D L D W W (Currently 9th on 29 points)

Last time we met…

The last time Fleetwood and Coventry met was in January 2017 at the Richo Arena. Town won 1-0 on the day thanks to a late bullet header from central defender, Cian Bolger. This win was part of Town’s unbeaten streak, as the club reached the play-offs that season.

Seven of the current squad were part of the 18-man squad in that fixture, with Alex Cairns, Ash Eastham, Cian Bolger, Kyle Dempsey and Ash Hunter starting for Uwe Rosler’s side.

One to Watch

Conor Chaplin was Mark Robins’ number one priority target in the summer and the Sky Blues boss secured his man on an initial loan until January, when the move from Portsmouth will become permanent.

Operating in the number 10 position, 21-year-old Chaplin was a product of Pompey’s youth academy, having joined the club at age six back in 2003.

Since then he caught the eye at each youth category, before breaking into his club’s first team back in December 2014 when he came off the bench against Accrington Stanley in League Two. That same season, in the April, he scored his first professional goal against Morecambe.

Since then he has made 104 appearances in the league for Pompey, scoring 22 times, before he joined Coventry on loan at the end of August 2018. He scored his first goal for the Sky Blues from the penalty spot against Oxford United earlier in the season.

Betting Preview

Town go into the game favourites, as they are looking to maintain their good form at Highbury, and are priced at 6/4 to collect all three points.

Coventry (19/10) travel up to Highbury on Tuesday, and after drawing against Peterborough United at home at the weekend, they will be looking for their first win in the league since the 23rd October in their 4-2 over Bradford City.

For Fleetwood to repeat their 1-0 score line in the game against Coventry, the odds are at 13/2, with a 2-1 victory being 9/1. For any of those results, or a 2-0 win, you can get a special offer of 9/4.
