Key quotes: Bolger's pre-Walsall press conference

3 May 2018

Cian Bolger has given his thoughts ahead of the final match of the season against Walsall.

On the whole season…

"After the back of last season, it has been a bit frustrating and in some ways disappointing but we are obviously looking forward to Saturday to get a win and also finish the season off on a high.

"We set high standards last year, and as I have said it hasn't quite been that season for us but we need to go away, get a good rest and come back stronger for the new season ahead.

"At the start of the season, we sat down and set targets and those haven't been reached. We know we have the ability in the squad but haven't fulfilled our potential.

"Performances at times haven't been up to scratch and there are probably many other reasons why, but we need to forget about it and move on.

"We are obviously looking forward to Saturday to get a win and also finish the season off on a high."

On Walsall at the weekend…

"Walsall are a good team and they've managed to be safe with their result on Tuesday against Bradford, so they will come here with less pressure on them.

"I know they have some very good individual players who pose a threat, but as a team we need to be ready, play our own game and go and get the three points.

"Their result hasn't really affected us, because first and foremost we need to take care of ourselves and not worry about them or any other team.

"Being mentally ready is huge and that can help us going out to try and win a game of football.

On the job John Sheridan has done at Fleetwood Town…

"Obviously when the gaffer came in we were in a bad position and since he has been here, he has done a fantastic job.

"John hasn't changed too much and you see that in the system we have been playing, that was on shown last season too so all the lads knew their roles.

"The players and I want to get the win on Saturday to send him off on a high.

On Cian's own personal performances and highlights this season…

"My own season has been okay, as I said it has been frustrating with the results and that but I don't really look too much at that.

"We need to move on quickly and focus on next season, but there has been highlights this season with one being the FA Cup run we had.

"We gave a good account of ourselves in all the matches, especially against a Premier League side in Leicester City.

"But I think for the players it has been a learning curb and that shows just what it takes to get to the top.

"We just haven't achieved what we set out to do."

On sending the fans into the summer with a win…

"The fans as ever have been great this season. It has been slightly different to last year but they've always been there.

"I think it's important we send them off with a win on Saturday and also see them go away happy.

"For myself, I will be going back to Ireland to see the family and refresh myself ahead of the new season."
