Fleetwood Town head coach John Sheridan has shared his delight following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Northampton Town.

It was the Cod Army’s second win in a row, as well as making it five games unbeaten, as they pulled five points clear of the relegation zone.

Below are the key points from his post-match press conference…

On the performance…

“It’s the performance we needed for where we are in the league against a team who are around us. It’s a great performance in the respect that I always felt comfortable in the game.

“I think the work ethic of the players is outstanding at the moment and that’s what you need when you’re in the position we’re in. It was a magnificent clean sheet. In the second half I thought we played better, I never felt that we were in danger.

“I’m someone who would like to get the ball down and pass a lot more but for where we are and what we’re after that was a really good performance.

“The determination and the grit was great, everyone did what they needed and it was brilliant.”

On the opening goal and the performance from Kyle Dempsey…

“It was great awareness from Toumani Diagouraga to find Kyle, and it was a good goal. Kyle should be scoring seven or eight goals a season from midfield in my eyes, so I’m telling him to get forward more and I thought he was tremendous today.”

On Cian Bolger’s goal…

“It’s a relief to get the second goal. The keeper made a great save from Jordy Hiwula’s header just before the goal, and it’s a good finish from Cian and it makes life easier with not long in the game left.”

On keeping clean sheets…

“We’ve just got to continue doing it. It’s a good habit and the way we’ve won today is similar to how Shrewsbury have been winning games and they’re top of the league.

“We’re very hard to play to play against at the moment. If any team is coming here, even before they kick a ball they know they’re in for a really tough game. We’re hard to break down and we’ve got players in the team that will score goals like Paddy Madden and Ash Hunter but it’s good to get goals from different areas today.”

On the passing of former vice president Ted Lowery…

“It was very sad news. You could see the reception and the response from people. He loved the club and a lot of people loved him and I’ve only heard good things about him whilst I’ve been here.”
