Goalkeeper Alex Cairns faced the media on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s key match against Rochdale.

Cairns – who kept his clean sheet of 2018 on Saturday at Charlton – was in optimistic mood ahead of Tuesday’s trip to the Crown Oil Arena.

Below are the key talking points from his press conference…

On the result and performance at Charlton…

“To go away to a club like Charlton, who are obviously a massive club, to get a clean sheet and a point on the board was great for the team.

“We’ve been working towards it the last couple of weeks, I think the lads have shown they are defensively solid and the defensive solidity proved to be very vital at the weekend.

On keeping clean sheets…

“Last season was amazing but we had to look at this season and for me personally and as a team, we’ve not been good enough.

“We all know that and we all do train and work hard to try and put that right and hopefully now we can turn a corner and look forward to getting some points on the board.”

On his second season at Highbury…

“Before I came to Fleetwood I’d not had a run of games in a team and I’ve had to realise quickly that not everything is brilliant and merry. You’ve got to dig in and work hard and we’re doing that right now.”

On the relegation battle…

“I think everyone thinks we’ve got another game Tuesday, we deal with that and we go again Saturday. It’s done game by game and this squad is brilliant, the attitude is there and everyone gets on with each other. It’s a really good place to be around and come to this training ground everyday to work.

“Not many teams can say they have these type of facilities to work at and I think we feel quite privileged the position we’re in and we’ll do everything we can to get out of the relegation battle.”

On Rochdale…

“They’ll be looking at it the same as us. This is a big opportunity for both of us and I’m looking forward to it personally, I look forward to every game.

“It’ll be nice to get some points on the board against Rochdale definitely.”

On his personal development this season…

“I think I’ve definitely grown as a person (this year). I was fortunate last year, we had such a good run and this year I’ve had to become a man quicker than I ever have done.”
