With the start of pre-season training just seven days away, we caught up with goalkeeper Alex Cairns who is looking forward to getting back to work.

The goalkeeper was back at Poofoot Farm on Monday before meeting up with his teammates and new Head Coach Joey Barton.

Cairns – who joined Town in July 2016 – says he enjoyed his time away with his family, but equally is excited to get back on the training pitch.

"It's always nice to get away after a long hard season," said Cairns.

"On my break I met up with Lewie Coyle as well as Cian Bolger before he went away on holiday.

"I have spoken to a few of the lads and they are all like me, excited to return and I'm sure there will be a few fresh tans when we come back!

"I'm just dead excited for it to all start again.”

Cairns has a new boss to impress in Barton, with the keeper looking forward to making a good impression.

He added: "This week I will be getting myself as fit as possible.

"I feel fit and that has helped having done the program Youl Mawene and Jimmy Barrow set us up on. It's brilliant and again this helps the lads to come back on the first day in decent shape.

"However it's important that you get to rest mentally and physically after the season we had and that time away is needed.

"I do have no doubt in my mind that everybody will be coming in excited and hungry to work.

"We are now looking at a new chapter at Fleetwood and it's definitely an exciting one.

"I have had a conversation with the new gaffer about what he wants me to do and he wants me to join in with the lads more which is something I enjoy anyway. He still wants us to focus and work with Dave Lucas, but to get the whole group together more.

"I just want to get on the training pitch and see what the new manager wants from me."
