Barton: Midfielders tend to make great managers

Monday morning saw Fleetwood Town's new Head Coach Joey Barton sit in front of the media in his first official press conference.

The 35-year-old believes that former players who have played in the middle of the park, like himself whilst at Manchester City, Newcastle and Burnley – make good coaches like Pep Guardiola at the Premier League winners, and Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino.

"If you think about it we are in the middle of the park, communicating at all times with the defence, and are the hub of the team," said Barton.

"Usually slow plodding midfielders tend to be good managers, they really do and when you look at Guardiola, he is the best coach in the world and he was a midfielder who had no pace.

"Pochettino is someone of a similar profile and if you look at any great manager, they do tend to be a certain type.

"I am taking great refuge in the fact midfielders tend to make great managers."

The Englishman was very thankful for the opportunity that Chairman and Owner Andy Pilley has given him, and wants to repay the faith he and many others have shown in him.

He added: "Many people will question this appointment and the faith this football club has in me.

"I intend to replay that back 100 fold over the next three years, and If I am serious about being the best possible version of myself as a coach, this is the death of Joey Barton the player.

"Some will argue that is a very good thing, however I have loved playing and becoming a coach was something I have dreamt about doing as long as I was consciously aware.

"This does mean you close one chapter, and this is the start of a new chapter for Joey Barton the coach."
