Fleetwood Town will have a new number one this season, with goalkeeper Alex Cairns selected to wear the coveted jersey.

The 25-year-old will make the switch from the number 21, which he has worn since his arrival at Highbury from Rotherham United in the summer of 2016.

Cairns has gone on to make 81 appearances in all competitions for the club, keeping 34 clean sheets.

After being given his new squad number by head coach Joey Barton, Alex said: “As a goalkeeper I’m always worked hard and been desperate to one day have a number one shirt at a professional club.

“It’s an honour for me to wear the number one shirt for Fleetwood Town – I’m proud, and I know my family are too. The challenge for me now is to keep the number one shirt and I’ll be working harder than ever to do so.”
