New signing Craig Morgan has reflected on his first couple of weeks at the club as ‘successful’ as preparations continue for the new season.

Morgan spoke following Tuesday’s training match against Southport in which his side won 3-1, with the defender grabbing a first half goal.

The 33-year-old, who joined from Wigan Athletic this summer, was also quick to praise the work of new head coach Joey Barton, ahead of Friday’s first pre-season match against Salford City.

On making his debut for the club…

“The games are always the start of pre-season so it’s good to get one in so early.

“Lots of teams aren’t playing yet so I think the boys felt alright. We’ve done a good bit of work these last couple of weeks so I think the boys looked fit.”

On getting back to playing matches…

“It’s first one since July last year for me, so I’ve done all my rehab and I’m probably in the best shape I’ve ever been.

“I’m thankful for the people that have helped me with that. As a football player you want to play football more than anything, and if you’re not, it’s not what you came in the industry to do so it’s nice to be back out there.”

On his goal against Southport…

“I think the lads are surprised I got my leg up there to be honest!

“I should’ve been going in for the cross to actually head it but luckily it dropped to me, I’d prefer it to happen during the season though.

“I’m not actually the most prolific centre half so it’s something that I’ve always wanted to add to my game.

“With Clint [Hill] being the defensive coach and the gaffer loving that side of it, they’ll be working on set pieces because they are massive in football so I certainly would like to add some more goals to my game.”

On Joey’s influence as head coach…

“He’s been spot on. He’s brought enthusiasm and his hunger to be successful as a manager and it’s spreading.

“His ideas and his knowledge of the game is massive so we’ll try and implement those things.”

On this Friday’s game at Salford…

“They’ll be very tough, they’ll be a good side and they’ve signed well. They’ve got good players in there so it’s going to be a good game.

“I think they’ll come onto us a bit more than they [Southport] did today so it’ll be a different game of football.”

On the squad’s upcoming week-long training camp in Hungary…

“It’s a bit different for us, I’ve not been out there but all these facilities around the world are brilliant now and by the looks of what we’ve been shown it looks a fantastic facility so we’ll go out there, we’ll work hard and do the right things at the right times.”

On Town’s Sky Bet League One 2018/2019 campaign…

“There’s quality in the team, you can see that all round. The gaffer’s been brilliant at setting us up and giving us the bits of instructions that we need.

“I think it’s a massively open league this year and if we get it right and start off well there’s no reason why we can’t be contending for the top six places.”
