Key quotes: Burns’ pre-Wimbledon presser

Attacker looks ahead to opening fixture of the season

2 August 2018

Attacker Wes Burns sat down with the media on Thursday ahead of Fleetwood Town's first game of the season against AFC Wimbledon.

See below all the main talking points from Wes' press conference, which is available to watch on iFollow.

On pre-season…

“It’s been a good six weeks. We came in a week earlier than what’s normally expected, so hopefully we can hit the ground running with that extra week in our legs.

“You get a little less time on holiday, but it’s a great feeling to come back to football early and back in with the lads.”

On the atmosphere at Poolfoot Farm…

“It’s been a good feeling since the new gaffer has come in, with the lads getting on really well with each other. We have a laugh, but when we work, we work seriously.”

On a successful pre-season on a personal level…

“I’ve felt sharp since I’ve got back. The confidence that the management team have put in me has given me a boost as well. It’s been a good six weeks for me, getting a couple of goals and minutes.

“Since the end of last year and the beginning of this pre-season I’ve felt myself coming back. I feel like I’m close to getting back to the level which I was at when I first came on loan here.”

On playing wide right in a front three…

“I think that’s where I am most effective on the pitch. I’ve played there all my life as a kid and for me it’s second nature, I feel most comfortable there.

“One of the key things I’ve been working on is utilising my strengths and keeping my game simple. It’s working I think.”

On working with the new manager…

“He’s been different class, both with me and the rest of the lads. He’s been as straight as an arrow with me, and everyone knows exactly where we’re going.

“It’s a fresh start when a new manager comes in. It’s been like a new start and it helps that he and the staff have come in at the start of pre-season, rather than midway through the year.”

On carrying on the momentum from pre-season into Saturday’s game with Wimbledon…

“We’re seven from seven in pre-season so there’s no reason why we can’t carry that into the new season.

“We’re all buzzing and excited. We can’t wait to get going on Saturday.”
