Wes Burns says Wednesday night’s performance at Scunthorpe United is just a glimpse of what this Fleetwood Town side is capable of.

Burns starred in the 5-0 win, with the Welsh winger grabbing two goals in a stunning first half display which saw the Cod Army net four times in 12 minutes.

After matching his goalscoring record from last season already, Burns is hungry for more.

“It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had two goals in one game, so it’s obviously another big step forward for me,” said Burns.

“The talent we have in our dressing room is outstanding. To get a clean sheet and score five goals is superb, and we want to take this form to Charlton on Saturday now.

“We said at half-time that we had a 15-20 minute spell where we completely blew them away, and that’s a glimpse of what we’re capable of.”

Both finishes were different, a chip over the goalkeeper as well as a calm slotted finish into the bottom corner, something the 23-year-old has been working on.

“Steve [Eyre] said to be that I’m going to get into those positions where I’m being thread through, and in with a chance of scoring.

“We’ve worked on different types of finishing this week – the first goal was a little lift over the keeper – with the second in the corner too. I can’t thank the coaching staff enough for their work on the training ground with me every day, the work has paid off so far.

“It’s always good to get goals. These goals are a stepping stone for me and I know that I need to push on and repay the faith the fans, chairman and the manager have in me. I’m really happy for myself and for the team.”
