Fleetwood goalkeeper Alex Cairns has spoken to the club’s media team after a 4-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic at Highbury.

Goals from Max Power and Gavin Massey gave the Latics the lead at half-time, before Dan Burn and Chey Dunkley added to confirm their promotion to Sky Bet Championship.

Here is what Cairns had to say…

On the result…

“They’ve shown why they are top of the league and have been promoted. I think for the first half an hour we were the better side and we looked like we were going to score the goal.

“Their first goal is tough to take – I think we could have done a lot better, but once one goes in they start dictating play.”

On enjoying good spells in the first half…

“In this league you have to take your chances to score goals, and if we’d have got that first goal, we could really have dug in and made it difficult for Wigan. Today it just wasn’t meant to be.”

On conceding four goals from a goalkeeper’s perspective…

“My job is to keep the ball out the net, and unfortunately I’ve not done that on this occasion. I think for me personally, and as a team, it is hard to take the positives.

“If you break it down, and look at what we did well and what we need to do better, our aim hasn’t changed all season. We go into the next week looking to put this right.”

On being beaten by a better side…

“They’re a very good side, but I think we showed glimpses of what we can be. Like I say I think we had some good chances, and going into the next game we have to take the positives.”

On putting thing’s right at Peterborough next Saturday…

“The Blackpool game was really tough to take, I thought we did really well in that one so we’ll be looking to go to Peterborough and put it right and try and get the win.”

On ending the season in a positive manner…

“I think we started today by entertaining the fans – they were brilliant today and could really see that we fancied ourselves, so we have to take that into the next two games.

“We go all out, we enjoy our football, so we just have to show what we can do. I think we need to be a little harder to beat all over the pitch, including me. It’s a mentality thing and we have to put things right.”
