Skipper looks ahead to Robins clash at Highbury

Nathan Pond has said that Saturday’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Swindon Town is the start of ‘seven cup finals’ for Fleetwood Town.

Pond has been absent from Uwe Rosler’s side since picking up an injury in January’s win over Bristol Rovers at Highbury.

Town’s skipper played 45 minutes for Town’s Development Squad on Tuesday and could return for Saturday’s game with the Robins at Highbury.

“It’s great to be back in training and back in the fold,” said Rosler.

“There’s seven cup finals for us. I played 45 minutes for the Development Squad on Tuesday and I’m feeling good.

“I got injured against Bristol Rovers at home when I collided with Conor McLaughlin. I took a touch and didn’t see him coming. It took a while to heal – probably because of my age!

“If called upon I’ll start the game. I’m not sure if I have 90 minutes in me yet – I just need to build it up really.”

Despite Town sitting third in Sky Bet League One, Pond is refusing to look too far ahead and just focus on the job in hand.

“It’s not just about my career but the club as well and I’ve been there every step of the way and we’ve done it together.

“Anything can happen in these net seven games and we’ve got to take each game as it comes. We’re trying to chase teams down but we don’t want to get complacent.

“At this stage of the season so teams are playing for nothing, some are playing for promotion and some are fighting relegation. We have some tough games coming up.

“Last season we stayed up by a point on the last day of the season, so I’m sure people at Fleetwood wouldn’t have expected us to be where we are now – but we are for a reason.”
