Goalkeeper speaks ahead of trip to Coventry

Alex Cairns has praised the ‘great chemistry’ in Fleetwood’s side ahead of Saturday’s trip to Coventry.

Town were knocked out of the FA Cup by Bristol City on Tuesday night, though the Cod Army will be searching for a tenth match unbeaten in the league when they travel to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday.

Cairns has become regular in the Town starting XI since he came into the team in November, and he admitted how much he’s enjoying being back playing again.

“I’m loving it,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying myself at the minute – we’re on a great run, and we’re working hard, aiming in the right direction and working together as a team – we’ve just got to see where it takes us now.

“Obviously we’re disappointed to go out of the cup – we wanted to go as far as we could. But unfortunately it didn’t happen, but we can concentrate on the league now and hopefully get a win at the weekend.

“We’ve got a good group of players and it’s showing on the pitch that the team spirit’s really high at the minute.

“As a team we’re defending really well, and attacking really well too – we’ve got great chemistry in the team.”

Town’s stopper also paid homage to Ashley Eastham who made his first start of 2017 against Bristol City on Tuesday.

“When Ash came in, he did really well,” he said.

“That just shows our versatility in the team, that we can chop and change, and people can still do their jobs and know what their roles are in the team.”

Coventry sit rock bottom of League One ahead of Saturday’s match, but Cairns knows they are a side not to be underestimated.

“In League One you can’t write any team off at all. Everyone competes against everyone and you look at some of the results and they go crazy – you just don’t expect certain results.

“We just need to stay focussed and switched on – and do the best we can.”
