Fleetwood Town head coach Uwe Rosler says his side is aiming to make history on Tuesday night against Carlisle United in the Carabao Cup.

Rosler’s side face the Cumbrians at Highbury (7:45pm) in the first round of the newly branded League Cup, a competition that Town have never won a fixture in.

Since gaining promotion to the EFL five years ago, the Cod Army have enjoyed two visits to the FA Cup third round, but are looking to register a first win in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

“Last year we broke a few records, and that is one we’d like to break this year,” said Rosler.

“I spoke to the Chairman and the target is definitely to reach the second round for the history of the club. We want to create history for the club and we will try our best to do that.

“Carlisle beat Blackburn in pre-season, so we know that it will be a tough game against them. They won against us last year 4-2 in the Checkatrade Trophy, but on Tuesday it will be a different team and we are on our home pitch.”

The German played alongside Carlisle boss Keith Curle whilst at Manchester City, with the two remaining friends as they moved into their respective managerial careers.

“I have known Keith for a long time,” added the 48 year-old.

“He was my captain when I played at Man City and he looked after me and the rest of the players well. I could tell that he would be a manager then as he was a leader on the pitch. I have a lot of respect for him – he hates losing as much as I do!”

Rosler was speaking to the media at Poolfoot Farm on the back of Saturday’s opening day victory over Rotherham United.

“I think it is very early days at the moment. I think the new players have brought new elements to us. They still need to adapt to other elements, but we are obviously happy.

“It’s too early to come to conclusions. But it’s so far, so good since the players joined us back on the 19th June for pre-season.”
