Fleetwood Town midfielder Aiden O’Neill is pushing for his first league start in a red and white shirt ahead of Saturday’s game with AFC Wimbledon (3pm).

O’Neill – who joined the club on a season-long loan from Premier League side Burnley earlier in the month – came off the bench in both league games so far.

He impact in last Saturday’s win at Northampton was evident, after he assisted the winning goal for striker Devante Cole.

“I've only been here for a few weeks so it was good to get an assist,” said the 19-year-old.

"We’ve already won two-in-two so hoping to make it three-in-three on Saturday against a strong AFC Wimbledon side.

"We've watched a few videos of them today and it looks like they are trying to play a bit but we will have to wait and see how they will play."

"The lads have welcomed me brilliantly and competition is just a factor in football. You need it otherwise the team will become stagnant which is not good for the team.”

The Australian was quick to point out in his pre-match press conference at Poolfoot Farm that his side are looking for a 90 minute performance on Saturday.

"I mean we started strong in the first 15 minutes at Northampton, and the gaffer has said that to us, but we just dropped off a little bit.

“I mean the Alex [Cairns] has done an absolute worldie of save! I haven't seen anything like it and I haven't heard the end of it either from him as well! It was unbelievable."

"For me being only 19, it's so good to come in with young players and eager to learn and win, which is my attitude too.”
