Match report from Development Squad win...
Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad recorded an impressive 2-0 victory over an experienced Preston North End side at Poolfoot Farm.
Goals from Jack Sowerby and a stunning free-kick from Oliver Roberts either side of half-time capped a fine performance for Town.
PNE started the better and look threatening going forward with Eoin Doyle and Simon Makinok linking up well alongside fellow first teamer Ben Pringle.
However, it was Fleetwood who took the lead. Good pressing from Keano Deacon forced North End into a mistake allowing Alex Jakubiak to pick up the ball just outside the box, he fed Sowerby who beat a man before firing a left-footed strike into the bottom corner past Matt Hudson.
PNE did force one chance before the break, Josh Earl creating himself some space from a Pringle corner but his header went comfortably over Alex Cairns’ crossbar. The Cod Army led 1-0 at the interval.
It took just six minutes into the second period for Town to get the crucial second goal. Jakubiak was fouled just outside the box by Ben Davies which presented an inviting shooting opportunity, one which Roberts didn’t pass up. Roberts curled his left-footed effort into the far corner to again leave Hudson with no chance.
North End did have a couple of chances to towards the end of the game, with Clive Smith’s cross-cum-shot hitting the top of Fleetwood crossbar but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
