Striker praises sub after winning goal

David Ball praised substitute Ashley Hunter for the impact he made after coming on and securing three points for Fleetwood in their 2-1 win over Gillingham.

Ball himself found the net 19 minutes into the game, scoring his sixth goal of the season – but he was quick to acknowledge his strike partner after the match.

“He is talented,” said Ball.

“Ash has shown over the past couple of seasons what he can do – he certainly got a lot to learn but if he can do certain things right he can be a really good player.

“We got three points out of the two away games (last week) and we knew that playing at home we had to get back to winning ways. Fair play to the lads we’ve done that today.”

The Cod Army striker spoke after the match and said how he was pleased his side managed to overcome the physical threat what Gillingham brought the game.

“It was tough.

“I think from the middle part of the first half we played some good stuff and caused them problems when we got it down and played. We didn’t play as well as we have done but we got the win so that’s good.

“When you’re playing against big centre halves I’m probably the one that has to challenge for the long kicks so I’ve got to put my body on the line for the team.

“It’s probably the first time really I’ve played when I haven’t been scoring but I feel like I’ve contributed to the team in different ways.

“I’ve been staying in my own position for a run of games and it’s allowed me to be confident in that sense because I know I’ll get another go in the next game.”
