Bolger rues missed chances against Southport

Defender gives his reaction after Southport stalemate

Cian Bolger says it pleasing to keep a clean sheet, but was disappointed Fleetwood couldn’t take one of their chances in the 0-0 draw with Southport on Monday.

Town faced their National League opponents in the First Round proper of the Emirates FA Cup, and will now have to contest a replay at Highbury next week.

“The main thing is that we’re in the hat,” said Bolger.

“We probably had enough chances to see the game out but it is difficult place to come. They’ve been on a good run themselves but we didn’t take our chances which is a shame but we’re still in the hat.

“The first 15/20 minutes was always going to be tough coming to their ground and they we knew they were going to be bang on it. We grew into the game in the second half but we couldn’t take our chances which is a shame.”

Bolger spoke after the match about how happy he was with his side’s defensive efforts, keeping their first clean sheet in four games.

“It’s always pleasing to keep a clean sheet.

“I think we were comfortable defensively, we had the chances but just couldn’t take them. From a defensive point of view we looked good and hopefully we can kick on now.”

“There keeper has made two great saves. One from Jimmy Ryan’s free-kick and one from Devante at the end.

“I probably should have had a goal myself but a clean sheet is a bonus. Looking back I probably should have scored at the end but we live to fight another day.

Full ticketing details for the Emirates FA Cup First Round replay with Southport will be announced in due course.
