Season Review: May

27 May 2016

The Cod Army stayed up on the final day of the season

Town were live in front of the Sky Sports cameras for their first game in May as their fixture away to Walsall was chosen for live broadcast.

And the Saddlers got off to a dream start at the Banks’s Stadium as Welsh striker Tom Bradshaw turned in Jason Demetriou’s cross expertly.

Walsall’s fine start to the game continued, as on 18 minutes Paul Downing met a corner at the near post to volley past Chris Maxwell from inside the box.

Bradshaw then missed a good opportunity to put his side even further ahead in the second half, but Romaine Sawyers did make it three with a low long range effort.

Substitute Devante Cole did pull a goal back for Town on 84 minutes, when his curled strike from distance beat Neil Etheridge and found the bottom corner.

Steven Pressley’s men knew they had to pick up at least a point against Crewe Alexandra in their final game of the season, with Blackpool needing to beat Peterborough United.

First half goals from Bobby Grant and Devante Cole ensured Town’s safety in the third tier for another season as they deservedly beat the Railwaymen.

Grant opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a finish of the highest order which flew into the back off the underside of the bar from 25 yards.

Cole then netted his second goal in as many games three minutes later as he fired David Ball’s cross low past Ben Garratt.
