Hunter, Haughton and Nilsson took part in the event

Ash Hunter, Marcus Nilsson and Nick Haughton visited Larkholme Primary school in Fleetwood this afternoon to help children with their reading skills.

The trio met a group of young children who were taking part in the Reading Champions initiative, which uses the power of football to encourage young people to read.

Director of Community Matt Hilton, who was at the event, said: “The purpose of today was to really reinforce standards whilst being at school.

“It’s transferable from footballers being prepared, committed, hard working and giving of their best, so all those messages were given to the children.

“Statistically, primary school boys are two to three years behind females when it comes to reading and there’s a number of reasons for that.

“So the purpose was to use the players as role models and inspirations, and to hit home that reading is cool and that everyone should be doing it.”
