Manager praises club legend's brilliant mentality

Steven Pressley wants his Fleetwood Town players to follow the example set by Nathan Pond.

The skipper has led the way in fitness sessions during the Holland training camp this week and turned in a decent display despite a 5-0 defeat to Europa League side AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday.

And the 31-year-old club legend has certainly caught the eye of his boss this week.

“Considering the score I thought Nathan Pond was exceptional, he’s a real example to everyone in the squad,” said Pressley.

“I had to ask him to play 90 minutes and at the age of 31 I thought his performance was outstanding.

“He showed a brilliant mentality, a great determination and a superb performance.

“He’s the type of player that all the players should be looking up to.”

Town are currently two games into their week-long tour of Holland, after playing two games in as many days earlier this week.

Today has been listed as a down day for the squad, something Pressley feels is vitally important.

He said: “For the vast majority of the squad it will be a down day today.

“Those who have missed training for whatever reason will do some extra work, but for more they really do deserve a break.

“The tomorrow it’s a case of stepping it up again and making sure we are prepared for Saturday’s game.”

Town finish their tour of Holland on Saturday when they take on FC Roda from the Dutch top flight, kick-off 1pm.
