Goalkeeper on his start to life with the Cod Army

It is a brand new set of gloves for the Fleetwood Town goalkeeping department this season. Manager Steven Pressley has been busy recruiting three new shot stoppers ahead of the 2016/17 EFL League One season.

Chris Neal, Alex Cairns and Matty Urwin have all joined the Club and will be spending the next five weeks working alongside each other, with the aim to be the man in between the sticks for the Cod Army on the opening day of the season at Northampton Town.

Neal, who joined Town from Port Vale, told the Club website it is important that there is a strong goalkeeping union at Highbury Stadium, and so far the signs are positive.

“It is a fresh look to the goalkeeping department. I didn’t know Alex and Matty before I signed for Fleetwood but we got on really well.

“We want to have a strong goalkeeping union. We will push one another as hard as we can with David Lucas as our coach.”

Alongside the three new goalkeepers, Pressley has also signed a number of outfield players, including the likes of Ashley Eastham from Rochdale and Aaron Holloway from Wycombe Wanderers.

Neal continued: “All the new players have settled in quickly. Personally, I only knew a couple of the lads before I joined after playing against them in the past.

“We have made a good start to pre-season. We have had a few fitness-tests, some strength and conditioning training and running sessions so far. As a goalkeeper, our pre-season schedule is different to an outfield player but still intense.”

Another week of pre-season training awaits the Cod Army squad before their first pre-season friendly against Liverpool at Highbury Stadium on Wednesday 13th July.

“Liverpool is a great start to our pre-season schedule next week. They are the types of games that you want to play in.

“I am not sure what type of team they will put out but if they play for Liverpool they are going to be good footballers.”
