Forward keen to test himself against the Latics

Nick Haughton is looking forward to testing himself against Wigan Athletic on Friday evening for their final pre-season friendly.

The Latics, who were crowned champions of League One last term, will provide another tough workout for the Cod Army in the game which kicks-off at 7:45pm.

And 21-year-old Haughton is relishing coming up against Gary Caldwell's side, as he explained in an exclusive interview with Town’s official website.

Opening up by praising tomorrow’s opponents, Haughton said: “Wigan are a good side, they got a well-deserved promotion, it will be a tough test as they have improved on their squad, they are not far off their season as well, so they will be just as sharp, and just as fit. "

Haughton, who provided an assist for Ashley Hunter in Tuesday’s 3-1 triumph away at Southport, reflected on a second win of pre-season for the Fylde Coast side.

He continued: “The Southport game was a good game. It was good to get our fitness back, and to keep on top of it, we are looking forward to the start of the season now.

“I’ve played a lot of development games last year with Ash (Hunter) and we link up quite well, so it was good to play alongside him the other night, and it was good that he also got two goals.

“It was a good tough week, three tough games. It has been good, we are all getting a lot fitter now, so looking towards the start of the season, and we are looking sharp."

After returning from a three game tour of Holland, which included a game against Eredivisie giants AZ Alkmaar, Haughton revealed that the squad feel fitter, before confirming the aspirations of his team-mates for the forthcoming EFL League One season, which commences with a trip to Northampton Town at Sixfields on Saturday, 6th August.

Haughton said: “The three games were definitely not easy, especially in those conditions, it was really hot, but I feel a lot fitter.

“We don’t want to be down at the bottom, we want to be in a good stable position, towards the top end of the table."

The Manchester-born forward concluded his interview by looking at the competition for places in his position, and having played as a midfielder last season, he views himself in a more forward role, but knows a starting position is not guaranteed.

Haughton concluded: “There are quite a few players in my position, all very good players, the likes of David Ball, Ash Hunter, Aaron Holloway and Devante, it is no easy place, and I don’t think anyone has that place settled."
