Four games for Cod Army young guns

Fleetwood Town development squad have confirmed four friendlies, starting away at Longridge on Friday 15th July.

The young Cod Army side will also tackle neighbours Thornton and Scottish side Queen of the South at Poolfoot Farm.

Development boss Barry Nicholson is pleased with the opposition in place and believes they are all the perfect types of games ahead of the new season.

“The development squad played a couple of friendlies against non-league opposition last season and they were competitive fixtures,” said Nicholson.

“It gives the lads a good base and it is a test of character. Our opponents will work their socks off and they are the type of games we want the development squad to be playing in.

“The development squad will not be in a league again this season so it is all about building them up for games against strong opposition like last year.

“The game against Thornton in particular is a good one. It is a fixture that we have wanted to play for a while. Queen of the South visited us last season and they have decided to do so again.

“All good games and it is now all about building their fitness up. We will use as many bodies as we possibly can.

“The gaffer is keen for the younger lads to work with the first team so at the moment we are all training together. We don’t want to split the group too much just yet so it is great for the younger players to gain experience with the first team. It is ultimately the level they have to be at.

“We have a really good bunch of young players. With the Poolfoot Farm facility, there are no excuses why we can’t help push these players onto the next level.”

The development fixtures are as follows:
Longridge (A) Friday 15th July, 6pm kick-off
Squires Gate (A) Tuesday 19th July, 7pm kick-off
Thornton (A) Thursday 21st July, 7pm kick-off
Queen of the South (H) Tuesday 2nd August, 1pm kick-off
