Town drew 2-2 with Preston North End this afternoon

Barry Nicholson praised his development squad’s display at Poolfoot Farm this afternoon as they drew 2-2 against an experienced Preston North End side.

Thomas Grant put the Cod Army ahead in the first half before the visitors equalised, and French striker Vamara Sanogo then restored the lead but Town were pegged back one again.

The game gave an opportunity for first team players Nick Haughton and Victor Nirennold to both get some minutes under their belt ahead of this Saturday’s game at Coventry.

Nicholson said: “I thought the lads were outstanding today against a really experienced group of players from Preston. The young boys handled it really well.

“We asked them to play out from the back all the time and they did that. We put some nice pass and move movements together and took that into the final third.

“If the lads would have been a little bit more ruthless then we perhaps could have scored a few more goals in all honesty.

“But all in all everything we asked of them today was taken into the game, and like I say thought they were outstanding from start to finish.

“We hadn’t played a lot of football recently so it was really important that we started the game well and that we were right at it from the off.

“The last time we played Preston at Springfields they played another experienced team and struggled against them somewhat, especially set-piece wise.

“But today they came out of the traps really well, and everything we’d spoken about was put into practice. The two goals we scored were really good.”
