The Cod Army travel to Southend United this weekend

Conor McLaughlin feels Tuesday’s win against Peterborough has given them a massive confidence boost ahead of this weekend’s trip to Southend United.

The right back was part of an impressive defensive four which kept the Posh out, as Wes Burns and Eggert Jonsson netted in either half for the Cod Army.

He believes they now have nothing to fear when they make the trip to Essex on Saturday, and is confident they can pick up another victory.

He said: “Tuesday’s win has given us confidence again especially after last Saturday’s result as everyone knew we should have won the game.

“We kept our destiny in our hands with the three points but we all know that it’s just the start and we have to follow it up now.

“We know there’s a long way to go yet but we showed we’re definitely up for the fight. It was a big win for us especially with Oldham winning as well.

“The pressure mounts up on every game now so it’s vital we get as many points on the board as possible.”

McLaughlin is wary of a Shrimpers backlash however after they were beaten at Bloomfield Road against Blackpool last weekend.

“It’s going to be a hard game for us on Saturday because Southend are coming into it off the back of a defeat. They were probably expected to go to Blackpool and pick up a point at least.

“They’ll be wanting to put that right and we know it’s going to be difficult. We’ve been there a few times and know it’s a tough place to go.

“Phil Brown was really good with me when I was at Preston and he gave me my chance there and I played a lot of games under him.

“I’ll always be grateful to him for that but all friendships go out of the window on Saturday as we’ll be doing everything we can to beat them.”
