Attacker scored four as development squad thrashed Wolves

Barry Nicholson said he was delighted for Nick Haughton who scored four goals for the development squad in their 5-1 win over Wolves at Poolfoot Farm today.

The attacker caught the eye with a fine performance for the Cod Army as they deservedly beat their Championship counterparts at the Club’s new training ground.

Town found themselves a goal down early on but responded well through a double from Haughton before a trialist added to the lead before the break.

Further goals from Haughton in the second half made sure of the win, and extended the group’s unbeaten run to three games.

Nicholson said: “I’m delighted for Nick scoring four goals. He’s obviously not had the season that everybody expected of him this year after finishing last year on a high.

“He’s not featured as much as he probably would have liked but he’s come into the team today and scored four goals and stuck a couple of penalties away.

“His attitude has been excellent since coming into the group. It’s important that the first team lads just do things right when they play for the development squad.

“They need to keep themselves ticking over because you never know when the manager might want them, so he’s done himself no harm at all today.”

The Scotsman admitted that it was probably their best performance of the campaign, and praised his squad for their application.

“The performance was up there with one of the best performances of the season. The lads were brilliant once again and I’m pleased for them.

“Considering we had three or four trialists playing and a team that had just been thrown together in the last day, we did really well and deserved the win.

“We had the likes of Joe Davis and Danny Andrew playing at the back to give some of the first team game time, which always helps the younger ones coming through.

“Overall the application, work rate and everything that goes with it was excellent. We played some good stuff in some quite difficult conditions.”
