Rooney: It's important we perform in both halves

Town's youth side lost to Preston at the weekend

Fleetwood Town youth team manager Nathan Rooney admitted his frustration following the young Cod Army’s defeat at the hands of Preston North End on Saturday morning.

James Boyd notched the game’s goal just after the half hour mark, as Fleetwood succumbed to a narrow defeat at Chorley’s Victory Park Stadium.

And reflecting on the loss to the young Lilywhites, Rooney discussed the encounter in an interview with the Club’s official website.

He said: “Overall, I think I said it at the start of the season that we need to perform in both halves, not just one.

“I think some of the lads looked lost in the first-half. The two week break has caught up with some of them as they were suffering from cramp in the latter stages of the game.

“In the second half I was more than happy with the chances we created, but we were just a bit negative at the end. Overall the second half was quite balanced, but we’ve not turned up in the first-half.

“The players need to improve on knowing the forward passing patterns, they need to learn a new system, but it’s individual requirements that need to be worked upon which will allow a formation to work.

“We’ve not showed much common sense on the ball, and some players didn’t turn up and there were a lack of movement and runs, and a lack of heart in the first half.

“I know what the lads have, I know what they possess and it’s about putting that into practise.”
