Cod Army bowed out at the quarter final stage

Development squad manager Barry Nicholson felt his side improved after the break as they were defeated by Oldham Athletic on penalties in the Lancashire Senior Cup.

Ricardo Fuller had given the Latics a second half lead with a finish inside the box, but Ash Hunter equalised with a minute to play to level proceedings.

The game then went straight to penalties, and the visitors were victorious in the end as they claimed a 7-6 win.

After the game, Nicholson said: “I thought it was a game of two halves today. In the first half we were really loose in possession which is unlike us to be fair.

“We’ve got people who can handle the ball so we’ve got to just trust each other a little bit more, but every time we got the ball forward it broke down.

“It gave a lot of work for our midfield three and our back four to do if the ball doesn’t stick up top, but second half we were a lot more positive.

“We told them at half time to tidy it up a little and we were much better going forward. I thought we deserved to get back in the game personally.

“Unfortunately though penalties is a cruel game and somebody is going to miss. I’m disappointed to go out.

“We pushed Ash a little but further forward in the last 10 minutes and he popped up with a great header in the box.

“Tyler Forbes showed great energy down the right hand side late on in the game, and it was a good pick out to find Ash.”
