Welshman pulled off two shootout stops

Chris Maxwell was delighted with his saves during tonight’s penalty shootout win over Sheffield United in the JPT Trophy.

The Welshman saved spot kicks from Billy Sharp and Jay McEveley as the Cod Army picked up a 4-1 shootout victory at Highbury.

With the game having ended a stalemate after 90 minutes, Nick Haughton scored the decisive penalty to send Steven Pressley’s side through to the semi-finals.

After the game, Maxwell said: “I enjoyed it tonight because every goalkeeper loves penalties as it’s a chance to be a hero and it was my night.

“Everyone played really well. There were a few changes made but we all did an excellent job.

“We stuck together at the end but for the majority of the second half I didn’t have too much to do other than the odd save.

“As a goalkeeper you’ve got to keep your concentration for 95 minutes of the game. You’ve still got to organise the players and sweep anything up that comes your way.

“It was a good solid performance from each and every one of us, and it was just the icing on the cake to win it like that.

“It has been disappointing not to have as many clean sheets this year so hopefully we can build a little bit of momentum.

“Of course I want to better myself each season which means having to have better stats year on year, but I just think about the next game that’s coming.

“For me that is this Saturday and I need to make sure I do my job and that the lads in front of me also do theirs.”
