Midfielder Conor Smith spoke of his delight to the Club website at signing a professional 12 month contract with the Cod Army.

The youngster broke into Barry Nicholson’s squad during the second half of last season, and adapted his game well having spent time progressing through the youth ranks.

Smith played a key role in U18s’ success last season in the FA Youth Cup, with Town reaching the third round stage against Premier League side Sunderland.

After signing his deal, Smith said: “I’m over the moon. I’ve enjoyed two years as a scholar and I’ve put my graft in and it’s finally worked out.

“At first I obviously had to cement my place in the youth team but I knew to have any chance of getting a contract I needed to push on get into Baz’s squad.

“I was doing well in the youth team and getting lots of assists, and obviously Baz was there because he was watching lots of games.

“The step up to the development squad was massive at first. Training was a lot faster and more physical, and I had to adapt more because we were in and around the first team.

“I’ve got to earn myself another contract now once the 12 months is over, and with help from Baz which is massive, I think I’ll give myself a chance.”
