Fleetwood Town Football Club’s Community Trust have submitted an application to Aviva Community Fund to expand their Men that matter provision.

Walking Football is one of the latest crazes in the football world. It is an activity that gives those that have given up the chance to get back into the sport they love or try something new.

The Aviva Community Fund will finance over 362 entries across four different fund levels and four categories, spreading awards to communities throughout the UK. Voting is open from the 1st to the 30th May and when people register they have 10 votes they can place on the project of their choice.

The ‘Men that Matter’ project aims to offer men a no pressure, accessible method of building their confidence, increasing their personal opportunities and improving their physical and mental well being.

The project will first focus on men over 55 due to the significant challenges faced by these often marginalised members of our community. Men in later life are the group least likely to access services and ask for help through traditional routes, so our project aims to address these barriers to engagement by offering routes to help and advice in a non-threatening approachable manner, using the common interest of football as a means to achieving long term personal goals.

The Men that Matter project will engage older men on the basis of being involved in a project with their local football club. They will be enrolled on a 10 week programme which will offer a range of learning and development opportunities, working side by side with other local older men.

They will join Men that Matter to embark on a rehabilitative journey, leading to their increased physical and mental health and increasing their ability to find and take part in regular activities such as volunteering and paid employment – becoming more active members of their local community.
