Defender plays right back in 0-0 draw

Fleetwood Town defender Conor McLaughlin completed the full match for Northern Ireland last weekend as they drew 0-0 with Romania.

The result leaves McLaughlin’s nation one point behind the Romanians in the Group F standings as they bid to reach the European Championships in France next year.

The stalemate at Windsor Park means that Northern Ireland are on course on qualify, with Michael O’Neill’s side nine points clear of Finland in fourth place.

The top two in the group qualify automatically with the third placed side playing a knockout match to determine whether they will line up in France.

The point leaves Northern Ireland on 13 from six games, one behind Romania and two ahead of Hungary in what does seem a three-team scrap for the two automatic qualification places.

The Irish next face the Faroe Islands away on 4 September, followed three days later by Hungary at home.
