Midfielder hit the back of the net twice against Getafe

Fleetwood Town midfielder Antoni Sarcevic spoke of his content as the Cod Army signed off pre-season in style with a 2-0 win over Spanish side Getafe.

Sarcevic, who was captain for the evening, grabbed both of the goals from the penalty spot following fouls on Jamille Matt and Vamara Sanogo in each half.

The 23-year-old, speaking after the final whistle to the Club’s media team, mentioned how the side have done in pre-season and his fledgling partnership with new signing Jimmy Ryan.

“I knew of his qualities before he came in. I was happy to see we were signing him because he’s a good footballer.

“Myself and Jimmy look as though we could do it this season and I’m looking forward to it.”

He added: “We’ve had a few disappointing results in the last few which we feel we didn’t deserve but credit to us that we’ve got a result there in the last pre-season game to take us into Saturday.

“Obviously, pre-season, that’s what it’s about. You want to get the results but the main thing is to get match fit for the season because you don’t win points in pre-season so it’s all about getting match fit.

“It’s nice for the lads to get the win we’ve deserved in the last three games.

“Getafe are a well-known La Liga team and shown with the players they brought on towards the end that they’re top quality.”

Continuing: “They might have looked good from the stands, but they didn’t really do anything to cause problems, we dealt with them well.

“First half, we created many chances. We hit the bar, Dec was in one-on-one, we scored a penalty.

“That’s a lot of chances where we were in, I can’t really remember any chances they created all game.

“They only really started getting into it when they brought the lads on off the bench who were the big names in the side. So, we’re buzzing and are happy with the win.”

Talking about Southend and team mate Jamille Matt’s recovery from injury he said: “It’s going to be a tough fixture, they’ve come up next season so we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.

“We’ve played well for the last three games. The lads are buzzing and looking forward to it.

“We’re buzzing to have him back, he’s deserved nothing less than to be back playing.

“We’re all happy to see him back playing on the pitch and I tell you now, he’ll be a handful this year.”
