Nicholson impressed with development squad's fitness levels

Town lost to Rapid Vienna in their first friendly in Austria

Development squad manager Barry Nicholson gave an update to the Club’s website about his side’s progress whilst out in Austria.

The Cod Army’s development and youth teams flew out to the continent during the middle of last week and have enjoyed a productive tour so far.

Nathan Rooney’s youth team have won both of their games, while Nicholson’s men slipped to defeat against Rapid Vienna.

Nicholson said: “It’s obviously been difficult training in the heat over here but I think the boys will see the benefit of that when we get back home.

“We’ve had to cut short some of the sessions and have included a lot of shorter, sharper stuff instead just due to fatigue really.

“First and foremost fitness is the key over here. We need to get the lads back in shape as we’ve got a few games when we get back home which we want to be fully fit for.

“It’s a great chance for a few of the boys to bond together as well as there’s three or four new players in the group.

“They’re with each other 24/7 from the morning runs right through to the evening training session.

“We’re trying to do bits away from the football as well such as visiting Vienna just to mix it up for the lads as boredom can be a big thing when you’re away for so long.

Nicholson’s side lost their first friendly out in Austria as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Rapid Vienna.

“You don’t like to lose any game but we have to take into account they were much older than us.

“We didn’t start the game very well and didn’t get to grips with their system and how fast they played.

“With the conditions we decided to sit off them a little bit more given the heat and the conditions.

“For 50 minutes I was really pleased with the lads as we created some chances and could have scored a couple more goals.”
