Former Hearts and Wolves man could make his debut against AFC Fylde

Fleetwood Town are delighted to confirm the signing of Icelandic international Eggert Jónsson on a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

The 26-year-old, who can operate as a centre back or central midfielder, joins the Club on a free transfer following the end of his contract at Danish side FC Vestsjælland.

Jónsson, capped 19 times by his nation, has a wealth of experience in British football having appeared over 150 times combined for Hearts, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic.

The former Premier League man linked up with his new team mates for the first time on Wednesday morning and could make his Town bow against AFC Fylde on Thursday evening.

Manager Graham Alexander said: “Eggert is someone we met towards the end of last season and he came across to Fleetwood to have a look at the stadium and our training ground at Fylde at the time.

“We’ve had to be patient with a couple of players we’ve tried to recruit this summer and that’s been the case with Eggert.

“He’s come across to have his medical and sign the papers, and we’re really pleased to get him on board because he’s a very good player.

“He can play at centre half or in midfield, and has previous experience of the British game with Hearts in Scotland and later Wolverhampton Wanderers in England.

“We feel we’re getting a good player at a good age who fits the profile of what we’re looking to do. We believe we can both be good for each other.

“He wanted to come back to English football after his spell at Wolves where it didn’t quite work out as well as he would have hoped.

“He’s got very good experience and is a competitive player. He knows the game and gives you versatility by being able to play centre half and central midfield.

“We’re building a squad that needs to fit the profile of what we want to bring in, plus give us variety within the squad and he definitely does that.”
