Youngster is one of three youth players to move up

Youth team midfielder Conor Smith has recently been given the opportunity to move up to Barry Nicholson’s development squad.

Smith, alongside Michael Muscat and Matty Williams, have all caught the eye for Craig Madden’s side, and have now been given a chance to prove their worth at a higher standard.

Central midfielder Smith has been a constant for the young Cod Army over the past season and a half, and performed admirably in Town’s run to the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

With his contract up at the end of this current campaign, the Liverpudlian hopes he has done enough to earn himself another deal with Fleetwood.

Smith said: “It’s a big step up for me because the playing ability is a lot higher and the games are a lot faster, but I feel that I’ve adapted well so far.

“I’ve enjoyed it a lot and manager Barry Nicholson is great to work with because he was a central midfielder as well, so we’re always doing passing drills and so forth, and I just love it.

“I have to thank Craig Madden, Steve Carlin and Mark Bowley though because they’ve pushed me on and believed in me as much as I did.

“It was them who helped me with my performances, which led to an opportunity to move up to the development squad.

“Michael Muscat, Matty Williams and myself have all proved that we should be getting a shot there now, so we’ve been given the opportunity and we need to continue to prove it again.

“I think I’m on the right tracks to getting a contract but I never want to be too over confident because I always need to keep focused and keep my head down.

“If I give it my all between now and the end of this season, then I’ll have no regrets.”
