Ashley Hunter scored both of Town's goals

Development squad manager Barry Nicholson was full of praise for his players after they defeated Leeds United 2-0 this afternoon.

Ashley Hunter scored both of Town’s goals in what was his first game for the Club since joining from Ilkeston in the New Year.

The game also allowed first teamers Tom Davies, Nathan Pond and David Ball some playing time as they continue to get back to full fitness.

After the game, Nicholson said: “It was a really good performance. They haven’t had a game for a while which makes it even better as the lads have really been looking forward to a fixture.

“There’s been a lot of games called off over Christmas and New Year, so to get a fixture in was something we wanted doing as quickly as possible.

“Leeds had a lot of lads who have played first team football for them, so we were up against a really experienced side, but the performance was very, very good.

“It was important for us that the likes of Tom, Nathan and David got some minutes under their belt, and the rest of the development lads performed well.”

Nicholson was pleased with Hunter’s contribution up top alongside Ball, and hopes the youngster can add to his Fleetwood tally over the coming weeks.

“Today was Ashley’s first game for us as he joined us around Christmas so it was the first chance we had to really look at him.

“He worked really well up front with David Ball and was a constant threat. He’s got great pace and never gives defenders a minute's peace.”
