Alexander: It was an under par performance

Goals from Winchester and Jones proved the difference

An under par performance is what manager Graham Alexander described this afternoon’s defeat at the hands of Oldham Athletic at Highbury.

Two goals in the second half from Carl Winchester and Mike Jones ensured all three points for the Latics, as Town slipped to 11th.

The Cod Army were unchanged from last weekend’s victory at Leyton Orient, although there was a welcome boost to the bench with the return of Nathan Pond, David Ball and Liam McAlinden.

After the game, Alexander said: “We all wanted another positive result today, and if we’d taken our chances in the first half then we would have set ourselves on the way to doing that.

“We didn’t, and from our point of view we conceded two poor goals and missed a couple of chances again in the second half.

“It was under par for us as we set the bar quite high for the players. If we aren’t at our best then we need to learn to try and get a point out of the game.

“You’ve got to take your opportunities when they come along because they don’t come along that often.

“I thought we did enough in our play to score but we obviously haven’t, and two goals have cost us the game. Even though we created chances I don’t think we were at our best today.

Alexander introduced McAlinden, Ball and Nick Haughton to the fray after the interval, and the manager was pleased with their contribution.

“We looked at our bench and knew we had a strong one today which was a positive for us and allowed us to make a few changes.

“The players have got to realise that they’ve all got competition as all the lads want to play. I thought all three players contributed when they came on.”
