Young Cod Army were beaten 4-0 by Port Vale on Saturday

Craig Madden and Steve Carlin admitted the Club’s youth team are going through a difficult patch as of late, and it’s up to the players to stand up and be counted.

The Young Cod Army travelled to Staffordshire last Saturday morning to take on Port Vale, but were on the end of a heavy 4-0 defeat.

Town conceded three in the first 20 minutes against the Valiants, and despite tightening up at the back after the interval, it was a deserved three points for the home side.

After the game, the coaches said: “The scoreline was a fair reflection as on the day they were better than us.

“We were three down after 21 minutes and we’re miles off Port Vale. Some of the players weren’t working hard enough and were just feeling sorry for themselves.

“We weren’t up to speed and it was a reality check for some of them.

“We had words at half time, and although we only conceded one in the second half, they full deserved their victory.

“We’re a long way off where we want to be at the moment, and the lads have got to go back and just do the basics.

“One of those basics is working hard and working together as a unit.

“It’s a harsh reality for the boys right now with some of the second year lads moving up to the development squad.

“The first year players now have to take leadership out on the pitch.”
