Fleetwood Town vs Walsall postponed

12 December 2015

Game called off due to waterlogged pitch

Fleetwood Town can confirm that this afternoon’s fixture against Walsall at Highbury Stadium has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

After persistent heavy rain on the Fylde Coast, referee Scott Duncan deemed the surface unplayable.

It is the first time the Club have had a game called off on home soil since the start of the 2008/09 season.

Referee Scott Duncan said: "I've had a good look at the pitch and arrived early at 11.45 where I spoke to the groundsman.

“There's a lot of standing water on the pitch which is dangerous, and we've got to look at the game as a spectacle.

"If we do play a game in conditions like these you could end up losing two or three fixtures in the future.

"After consultation with the groundsman it's clearly obvious that it hasn't stopped raining here.”

Manager Steven Pressley believes Duncan made the correct decision, and that it could have had long term plans should it have gone ahead.

“The referee has made the right decision for a number of reasons, the ball wasn’t even rolling in certain areas of the pitch.

“Without doubt it’s the right decision and it’s not just the right decision for today, as it could have had a long term impact had we played.”
