Young Cod Army picked up their second successive win

Fleetwood Town youth team boss Nathan Rooney is delighted with how is fledgling talents are coming along following their 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday morning.

It was the young Cod Army’s second consecutive victory as they won on the road last weekend against Carlisle United.

Striker Mamadou Djabi continued his impressive recent goalscoring form as he netted the game’s only goal, and Rooney was full of praise for his side despite a slow start.

“We struggled in the first 45 minutes but then our attacking quality shone through and we’ve kept the momentum going through with Mamadou.

“We were very slow out of the blocks in the first half, I’m not going to lie about that, but we stuck to our game plan well.

“It wasn’t a rollicking at half-time but more of a reassurance of what we’ve been doing well, and then we came out of the blocks in the second half much quicker and had 75 per cent possession.”

Adding: “Obviously with the youth team lads, going through the motions they struggle here and there but it’s great they’re building some success.

“The idea for us now is to try and get these individuals up to scratch ready for the first team, keep winning and keep them happy along the way.”

He finished by singling out Djabi’s importance to the team during pre-season and the early parts of this campaign.

“Centre-halves are scared of Mama’s pace. He looks like a fully-grown man now and is doing things with his back to goal that he wasn’t doing 12 months ago.

“For us it’s about bringing his character out and when you see a boy at the top of the field doing really well it motivates those behind the ball to keep feeding him.”
