Ashley Hunter netted the game's only goal

Fleetwood Town’s development squad recorded a 1-0 win over Burnley at Gawthorpe Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Ashley Hunter’s free kick early into the first-half gave Town victory in a game they dominated for large spells.

The Cod Army started the game brightly, and had two chances early on with Nick Haughton and Akil Wright both going close.

Haughton was later involved in the play yet again, collecting the ball from distance before skewing his shot wide of the post.

Town would not be denied in their efforts to open the scoring, and the break came through Hunter after 17 minutes as he drilled a low free kick into the bottom corner.

At the other end, Town goalkeeper Andreas Arestidou was equal to a Burnley effort, getting down well to keep Barry Nicholson’s side ahead.

Fleetwood continued to cause a threat to the Clarets’ backline, and Eddie Dsane forced Burnley keeper Nizic to beat the ball away.

The lively Dsane was involved in the action once again, cutting in from the right but could only shoot over the crossbar.

With the opening half drawing to a close, Arestidou had to be on his guard with the former Morecambe shot-stopper saving at his near post.

As the second-half got underway in East Lancashire, Town were quick out of the traps as Haughton whipped a teasing free-kick into the area, only for the ball to evade everyone.

Just after the hour-mark, Dsane curled an effort just over the bar as Town looked for a second goal to see the game out.

Despite some pressure from the hosts in the final few minutes, Nicholson’s side hung on to claim a win against the Championship outfit.
