Graham Alexander thrilled with first win of the season

Graham Alexander hailed his players after they scored four goals at Gigg Lane to defeat Bury in a local derby this evening.

Town fell behind early on to a Leon Clarke goal but responded through Conor McLaughlin before Tom Soares put the home side back in front.

Tyler Forbes brought the Cod Army level before half time, and Jamie Proctor put his side ahead midway through the second half for the first time in the game.

Antoni Sarcevic made it four on 82 minutes as Lyle Della-Verde was brought down in the penalty box, however endured a scare as Danny Rose pulled one back soon after.

Alexander said: “Tonight was a thriller. We fell behind to a goal which shouldn't have been allowed and I felt we were very hard done by.

“The players responded excellently to get back into it and fell behind again, but the players showed great heart in themselves and their teammates.

“We produced a superb performance to win here tonight. Gigg Lane is always a tough place to come as they’re a good team.

“We deserved the three points without a doubt, and the players deserve a massive pat on the back as they were fantastic.

“We’ve had to keep the players upbeat recently as there’s been a little bit of negativity with results, but we’re only three games into a season with a new team.

“Like I said on Saturday, we’re going to take the odd bloody nose along the way. The performances have been there and the chances have been there, but we haven’t taken them.

“Tonight we did though and it justifies what we’ve been working on. They worked hard for every ball and competed properly.

“Formations don’t win games and they don’t lose games either, it’s all about the players going up against their opponent.

“We feel this way of playing suits the players we have and I think the stats over the last few games just prove that.

“The biggest stat in football is the result and it’s gone for us tonight, and we have to make sure that’s the bar set now.”
