Match Report: Liverpool 1-2 Fleetwood Town

24 April 2015

Development squad recorded famous win over Premier League side today

Fleetwood Town’s development side recorded a famous win over Premier League side Liverpool at their Academy training base in Liverpool this afternoon.

Akil Wright gave Town the lead midway through the first half with a sublime long range finish, however the Reds replied with 10 minutes left.

It took the Cod Army only a minute to retake the lead though as Harvey Hodd finished well in the box to beat the Reds’ keeper.

Liverpool began the game well and exerted some early pressure on the Town back line, but keeper Brendan Moore was in fine form and twice made some vital stops.

Despite their early dominance it was Fleetwood who took the lead when Wright broke forward from midfield and found the bottom corner with a strike from distance.

The goal buoyed Town and they grew into the game more and more as the half wore on; Trialist A going close with an effort.

The Reds were guilty of squandering a good opportunity to get back into the game just before the break, when they dragged an effort across the face of goal from a good position.

Chances were at a premium at the start of the second half, and it took until the hour for any real goal mouth action when the home side rattled the crossbar from just inside the area.

Max Cartwright later sent a deep Conor Smith corner wide of the post as Barry Nicholson’s side looked to double their advantage.

Town continued to attack, and Trialist B was the next to go close when he burst from midfield and found space before firing over the bar.

Samed Yesil brought Liverpool level in the 79th minute when he beat a defender and rounded keeper Moore with a well taken finish.

However Town responded immediately through Hodd, as he latched onto a fine ball and hammered home inside the box to win the game.
